    Please solve function problem

I appreciate an explanation, but please feed me the solution as soon as possible.

    Thanks,

    Scabbers

    Let f(x)= x^2-8 and g(x)=4x. Find (f/g)(3).

    Thanks.

(f/g)(x) is just a notational shorthand for \frac{f(x)}{g(x)}.

Can you evaluate f(3)? Then can you evaluate g(3)? (f/g)(3) is then

    \frac{f(3)}{g(3)}.

    As the previous reply quite-correctly pointed out, "f/g" means "f divided by g". Similarly, "f*g" means "f times g", "f + g" means "f plus g", "f - g" means "f minus g", "f^2" means "f squared", and so forth.
