Thread: Exponent problem

Determine how many times cells type b divide in a 24 hour period. I f you begin with one type b cell, how many cells will be produced in 24 hours?

(type b cell divides once every six hours)

I need help figuring this one out.

I had a problem before this one that was the same and it's answer was 2 to the 8th power.

(type a cell divided once every 3 hours)

I can't figure out how they got 2 to the 8th power.

Please help

I assume that each cell divides into 2 when it divides. However many cells we have at any time, six hours later we have twice that number. So
initially: 1 cell
after six hours: 2 cells
after 12 hours: 2x2 = 4 cells
after 18 hours: 2x4 = 8 cells
after 24 hours: 2x8 = 16 cells
...
after 6n hours: 2x2x...x2 (n times) = 2^n cells
