Thread: Two More Questions For The Night.

I've been working on homework just about all afternoon and all night, getting to the point where I need sleep but before that I have questions about two more.. Questions? xD

-(19 - 3s) - (8s + 1) = 35

This one is really getting to me.. Since both sides are in parenthesis but I can't really well subtract or add them together. >.<;

5(x + 3) - 3x = 2(x + 8)
= 5x + 15 - 3x = 2x + 16

In this problem I know I need to merge 5x and 3x together to get any further and that is where I have a dilemma. 2x or -8x or neither! ;-;

So for the first one, just distribute in the negatives. So

-(19 - 3s) would become -19 + 3s

and - (8s + 1) would become -8s - 1

the problem is then -19 + 3s - 8s - 1 = 35

combine like terms and solve

the second one turns out to have no solution.

when you simplify both sides it becomes

2x + 15 = 2x + 16 and no x could make this equal

in other terms if you subtract the 15 the problem is then

2x = 2x + 1 so the right side is always 1 higher then the right, so they are not equal

That doesn't seem right though. :< My answer that is, anymore imput?

you could always substitute your answer back in and see if it comes out right

I see the problem.
-19 - 5s - 1 = 35
5s - 20 = 35
In these two steps you are not carrying the minus sign on the 5s
So it should be
-19 - 5s - 1 = 35
-5s - 20 = 35
-5s = 55
s = -11
