Since 12+q must happen before the multiplication of the expression in parenthisis, i don't see how it can be expanded

Actually, the order of operations specifies that the multiplication by the q must happen before the addition to the 12. :D

12 + q x 3p - q x 5
12 + 3pq - 5q
