Stupid question...how do I know when I'm done? Solving a polynomial equation

Solve the equation $\displaystyle 2x^2-x-7=0$. Show your work. No decimals answers will be accepted.
Am I supposed to solve for x? How do I know where to start, and how do I know when I am done?
