    Word Problems question 4

    David cuts a rope 60m long into two pieces in the ratio 2:3. What is the length of the shorter piece of rope?

    2 + 3 = 5, so essentially (not literally) Dave has cut the rope up into 5 parts.

    So to find the length of 1 part, divide 60 by 5 = 12m

    The shorter rope has the 2 parts of the 5, so multiply your length of 1 part by 2 and you get 12 x 2 = 24m.
