It doesn't.

$\frac{x^2}{x^2 + 1} = \frac{(x^2 + 1) - 1}{x^2 + 1} = \frac{x^2 + 1}{x^2 + 1} - \frac{1}{x^2 + 1} = 1 - \frac{1}{x^2 + 1}$.
