Thread: Please need help solving problem (line chart)

Hi all, I was wondering if someone can be kind enough to help explain to me how I would go about solving this question. Its been a very long time since I did maths of this level and am pretty sure for most of you its as basic as you can get but if someone can explain to me how you came up with the answer that would be fantastic and I would be extremely grateful.

The Graph shows the distance travelled by a MotorCycle and a Car during a day. How far in total does the MotorCycle Travel?



The answer is 80km but how do I work something out like this?

You can see from the graph that the motor cycle never stops increasing its distance until it gets to 40km from home. That we suppose that it goes approximately in a straight line I guess. Otherwise, there is really no way to know the traveled distance. e.g. it could go in a circle for 100km and the distance from home would stay the same. And then its comes back to its beginning point. Its thus makes again 40 km.

Ah gee whiz what a schoolboy of me lol. I add up the KM but the bits where it goes as a straight line I ignore. Argh schoolboy of me lol. I picked up on what you said there mate and it hit me. Cheers for making that aware for me
