I am using a Casio s-v.p.a.m calculator to do the following sum :-
10 raised to the power of .5 ( 10 ^.5 ) I get the answer 3.16227766.
However, if I input 10 raised to the power of 1 half ( 10 ^ 1 (ab/c)2 )
I get the answer 5, why is this? can any one help?

So for 1 half you press; 1, then the ab/c button, then 2..... 1/2
It is a split line calculator top and bottom so If you press " = " straight after entering 1 (ab/c) 2 then 1/2 appears on the bottom line. The same button has a shift function on it aswell........d/c....... so if you press shift then ab/c / d/c button the 1/2 that is displayed in the lower part of the window switches to 0.5........it has to really, any thing else would be plain lies?

press " = " shift d/c .........6.4
press ab/c again ..........32/5
Amazing!!! .......so using the calculator as such why is it that if I input 10 to the raised power of .5 ( 10^.5 ) I get the answer 3.16227766
BUT if I input 10 to the raised power of 1/2 (10^1 (ab/c) 2) I get the answer 5 ????????
On my TI-30XIIS calculator here,
10 ^ 1 Ab/c 2 = -----gives 3.16227766
64 ^ 1 Ab/c 3 = -----gives 4
8 ^ 2 Ab/c 3 = ----gives 4
So there is nothing wrong.
If in your Casio, 10 ^ 1 Ab/c 2 = ----gives 5, then there must be something wrong with your calculator.
Your calculator is working out 10^1 = 10 then / 2 = 5. It's using the order of operations rule B.I.D.M.A.S and performing
1. Brackets
2. Indices
3. Division
4. Multiplication
5. Addition
6. Subtraction
In that order. Try 10^(1(ab/c)/2) that should work as the calculator works out the brackets first.
