Hello, frankpham12!

Let $\displaystyle x$ = the number.

$\displaystyle \underbrace{\text{The sum of a number and six }}_{x \:+\: 6}\; \underbrace{\text{ multiplied by two }}_{\times\: 2}\; \underbrace{\text{ results in }}_{=} \;\underbrace{\text{ twenty-two}}_{22}$

There is our equation . . . $\displaystyle (x+6)\cdot2 \:=\:22$

Let's break it down:

The sum of a number and six, multiplied by two results in twenty-two.

Let $\displaystyle n$ be this mystery number.

Then, sum of a number and six can be represented mathematically as $\displaystyle n+6$

Now,
multiplied by two means that we take the previous result, and double it. Mathematically, it would be the same as saying $\displaystyle 2\left(n+6\right)$

Finally, the previous result results in twenty-two. This now gives us the equation $\displaystyle 2\left(n+6\right)=22$

Now you can solve for n.

EDIT: Soroban beat me.

X+6*2=22
2x+12=22
2x=10
x=10/2
x=5

checking
5+6*2=22
11*2=22
22=22

If you looked at the above work and matched it with the problem you would see it means addition.

As far as I can see, the question has been answered. Given the direction of the thread, I see no usful purpose in keeping it open.
