Call one number x
Then the other is 43 - x as they add up to 43

Four times the first is 4x

Twice the second is 2(43 - x) = 86 - 2x
Then 4 more is 86 - 2x + 4 = 90 - 2x

So 4x = 90 - 2x

6x = 90

x = 15
43 - x = 28

3. ## Thanks that helped alot

Thats so easy now. Thanks so much for the help; grately appreciated.

x+y=43
4x=2y+4

In first equation subtract 'y' from both sides:
x=43-y

In second equation substitute 'x' from first equation:
4(43-y)=2y+4

Simplify by dividing by 2,
2(43-y)=y+2

Open parantheses,
86-2y=y+2
