Solve 2/3 + 4/6
1. Make the denominators (bottoms) equal:
2/3 + 4/6
The denominator '3' goes into the denominator '6' 2 times, so multiply the 2/3 by 2/2 which gives you 4/6 (2 times 2=4, 2 times 3=6). The result is you have:
4/6 + 4/6
2. Now that the denominators are equal, you can add the numerators (tops), so 4+4=8. The result is:
8/6
or 1 and 1/3
or 4/3
I always liked to check my work using a calculator. If you have one, then you can check to see that 8 divided by 6 gives the same answer as 4 divided by 3. You can also use the calculator to actually check 2/3 + 4/6 by entering:
2 divided by 3 (which = .66666667)
4 divided by 6 (which = .66666667) :) they're the same because 2/3=4/6!
Add them together on the calculator and you get 1.33333333 which is the same as 4/3!
