Simplify: .$\displaystyle \log(4) - \log(400,\!000)$
$\displaystyle \log(4) - \log(400,\!000) \;=\;\log\left(\frac{4}{400,\!000}\right) \;= \;\log\left(\frac{1}{100,000}\right) \;=\;\log\left(\frac{1}{10^5}\right)$
. . $\displaystyle = \;\log\left(10^{-5}\right) \;=\;-5\cdot\underbrace{\log(10)}_{\text{This is 1}} \;=\; -5\cdot1 \;=\;-5
