    Pipes Working Individually

    ONE SMALL PIPE TAKES TWICE AS LONG TO FILL A TANK AS A LARGER PIPE DOES. IT TAKES THE TWO PIPES 40 MINUTES TO FILL THE TANK WHEN WORKING TOGETHER. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE EACH PIPE INDIVIDUALLY TO FILL THE TANK?

    Let x be the time taken to fill in the tank by the small pipe
    Let y be the time taken to fill in the tank by the big pipe pipe

    x = 2y ------------- Eqn 1
    x + y = 40 --------- Eqn 2

    Solve for x and y.
