# Thread: Problem evaluating an expression

1. ## Problem evaluating an expression

I am trying to find the answer to this problem but I'm doing something wrong, and I can't figure out what mistake I'm making.

Here's the problem:

(-2)²-2(-2)3+3²

First I got rid of exponents:

4-2(-2)3+9

Then I multiplied:

4-12+9

4-12+9=1

But here's the problem, 1 is not the answer, 25 is the answer, but I have no idea how someone would get 25. What am I doing wrong?

4-12+9 Mr F says: minus times minus gives plus ..... This line should be 4 + 12 + 9.

3. Oh, yes, that's the problem. Thanks for your quick help.
