Given: 2x = 12

Prove: x = 6

This is very short and simple.

2x = 12 Given

x= 6 Division property of equality

Or you could do it this way:

$\displaystyle 2x=12$ Given

$\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}(2)x=\frac{1}{2}(12)$ Multiplication property of equality

$\displaystyle 1x=6 \ \$ Multiplicative Inverse and multiplication

$\displaystyle x=6 \ \$Multiplicative Identity

3. ok.......

A very nice step by step reply.
