$\displaystyle (\sqrt{x^-5} + x^-5y^7x^-2) + (x^9y^-2x^9)$ I am not sure how to deal with the root in there.

Any number squarerooted: $\displaystyle \sqrt{n} = n^{1/2}$ $\displaystyle (\sqrt{x^{-5}} + x^{-5} y^7 x^{-2}) + (x^9 y^{-2} x^9)$ $\displaystyle = (x^{-5/2} + x^{(-5-2)} y^7) + x^{(9+9)} y^{-2}$ $\displaystyle = x^{-5/2} + x^{-7} y^7 + x^{18} y^{-2}$
