Solve for y? Is that what you are asking? Is that six fifths y or six over five y?

To expand on TomCat's post is the question:

(6/5)y - 5 = 7

or

6/(5y) - 5 = 7?

I'll solve both.

(6/5)y - 5 = 7

(6/5)y - 5 + 5 = 7 + 5

(6/5)y = 12

5*(6/5)y = 5*12

6y = 60

6y/6 = 60/6

y = 10.

Now the other one:

6/(5y) - 5 = 7

6/(5y) - 5 + 5 = 7 + 5

6/(5y) = 12

Multiply both sides by 5y to remove the fraction. Remember that y cannot be 0.

(5y)*6/(5y) = (5y)*12

6 = 60y

6/60 = 60y/60

y = 1/10 (y is not zero, so we're :) )
