    Word problem/rate

    A cruise boat travels 48 miles downstream in 3 hours and returns upstream in 12 hours. Find the rate of the stream.

    I will check tomorrow morning before I head off to schoool. I am definitely going to bed now.

    Thanks. Bye.

    Let the speed of the boat in still water be b, and the speed of the current be
    w, then:

    3=48/(b+w),

    12=48/(b-w).

    As b+w is the speed going down stream, and b-w is the speed going
    upstream.
