I need serious help with this, I can't understand it at all:

If I had, for example, x³ + 4x² + 5x + 2 and had to divide it by (x+2)

How would I do it?

Can you please go through a method with me to solve this? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are a couple of ways. Long division or synthetic division.

x^2 + 2x + 1

x + 2 ) x^3 + 4x^2 + 5x + 2

x^3 + 2x^2
------------
2x^2 + 5x
2x^2 + 4x
----------
x + 2
x + 2
=====

Synthetic division:
x^3 + 4x^2 +5x +2 divided by (x+2). Use -2 as divisor in synthetic division.

Quotient = x^2 + 2x + 1
