this is a little bit nasty!
What I would do is multiply the second equation by 3/4, making the coefficients of the x-terms the same. The take one equation from the other which will give you an expression in y only. find y, then sub this value of y into one of the first equations to get x. Then you're done.
thats what I tried doing and I'm getting x= 10/9 and y= -9/15 but when I plug it in to check, it isn't right?

You can turn the 2 equations into the following form:
10x-6y=3
12x+6y=8
Add these together, and you get x then y follows.
I agree - your answer isn't right!
