a) how much did she spend?
b) how much did she give to her mother?

Let x = Alice's salary

Let $480 = amount she gave to her father Let .25(x-480) = amount she gave to her mother These two amounts represent 43% of Alice's salary $480+.25(x-480)=.43x$ $48000+25x-12000=43x$ $x=\2000$ This is Alice's salary. $.25(2000-480)=\380$ the amount she gave to her mother. $.15(2000)=\300$ saved. So, she gave$480 to father, $380 to her mother which is a total of$860 to her parents which is 43% of 2000. She saved $300. She had$840 left to spend on beer and cigarettes or whatever.
