1. ## Writing the answer in scientific notation

My daughter is in seventh grade prealgebra and she is having a really hard time. For homework one of her questions is

36x10 to the seventh power divided by

12x10 to the negative 3rd power

so far we have come up with 360,000,000 divided by .012

I am trying to help her but I do not know how to explain the rest.

Could someone please help me out. If you can write out the next steps I will walk her through the solving process.

Thank you ahead of time for any help.

2. It is easier if you evaluate the expression as a whole instead of finding the number in the numerator and then the number in the denominator.

When you're dividing, you subtract the power of 10 in the numerator by the power of 10 in the denominator, so for your example it is

7 - (-3) = 10

Then you have 36/12 = 3

And the answer is 3 * 10^10

I'm not familiar with math code like many helpers on this forum, so maybe someone else can write it more clearly if you can't understand what I mean.
