    Smile Fractional equation

    Help would be greatly appreciated...

    -2-
    ------
    -2

    (Dotted line is a fraction line) I understand that 1/-2- = -2... but I am not sure how to do this one using that formula.

    Hello, violinist!

     \frac{-2^{-2}}{-2^2}

    Important . It does not say (-2)^{-2} or (-2)^2

    . . . . . . . . . .Only the 2 is raised to a power.

    We have: . \frac{-(2^{-2})}{-(2^2)} \;=\;\frac{2^{-2}}{2^2} . . . (Negative \div negative = positive)

    Then: . \frac{2^{-2}}{2^2} \;=\;2^{-2-2} \;=\;2^{-4} . . . (Division rule for exponents)

    Finally: . 2^{-4} \;= \;\frac{1}{2^4} \;=\;\frac{1}{16}
