    Smile Fractional equation

    Help would be greatly appreciated...

    (Dotted line is a fraction line) I understand that 1/-2- = -2... but I am not sure how to do this one using that formula.

    $\displaystyle \frac{-2^{-2}}{-2^2} $

    Important . It does not say $\displaystyle (-2)^{-2}$ or $\displaystyle (-2)^2$

    . . . . . . . . . .Only the $\displaystyle 2$ is raised to a power.


    We have: .$\displaystyle \frac{-(2^{-2})}{-(2^2)} \;=\;\frac{2^{-2}}{2^2}$ . . . (Negative $\displaystyle \div$ negative = positive)

    Then: .$\displaystyle \frac{2^{-2}}{2^2} \;=\;2^{-2-2} \;=\;2^{-4}$ . . . (Division rule for exponents)

    Finally: .$\displaystyle 2^{-4} \;= \;\frac{1}{2^4} \;=\;\frac{1}{16}$
