    Smile Linear Equation

    Hi,
    I am stuck on how to solve this:

    2x - [3 + (x-5)] = 6

    I know the answer if 4, but not how to get it!

    If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful.

    2x - (3 + (x - 5)) = 6

    2x - (3 + x - 5) = 6

    2x - (x - 2) = 6

    2x - x + 2 = 6

    x + 2 = 6

    x = 4

    Thank you, Ice Man!

    I thought I had to keep (x-5) in tact.
    So grateful,

    2x-3-x+5=6 (2x-x=x)
    So, x+2=6
    x=6-2=4
    So, x=4
    Always, when before the (..) you have the "minus" sign, the numbers out of the (..), are always with opposite signs.
