Find the largest numbers that divide 18 and 24, that is 6. After dividing both by 6 ya have, 3/4

The long way

$\frac{18}{24} = \frac{9}{12} = \frac{3}{4}$

Basically you divide the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) by the same number. This has the effect of leaving the numerical vallue of the fraction the same. The bigger the number you use to divide the less steps you will have to do (though the number will have to divide into both the numerator and the denominator)

A short cut for calculator papers.

Enter the fraction into your scientific calculator as a fraction (ie don't use divide). Most (but not all) calculators will cancel it down for you.

DON'T rely on this method. It is usually a non calculator paper question.
