    In order to add fractions you need to have a common denominator. You can add the whole number parts separately from the fractional parts and then add the totals together at the end, or change the whole fractions into improper fractions (for instance, 2 1/2 = 5/2).

    5/12 + 2 1/2 + 3/4=?

    First change mixed numbers into a improper fraction

    \frac{5}{12} +\frac{5}{2} + \frac{3}{4} =

    Next find common denominators

    \frac{5+30+9}{12} = \frac{44}{12} = \frac{11}{3}
