A rectangular nuclear waste holding facility is 100 m long and 70 m wide. A safety zone of a uniform strip of more then 20 m in width must be constructed around the facility. Determine the width of the strip of land to the nearest metre, if the area of the facility and the strip is 90000 m^2?

let the width of the strip be x

then the new length of the facility and strip is (100 + 2x)
the new width is (70 + 2x)

we want the area to be 90000, thus we want

(100 + 2x)(70 + 2x) = 90000

now solve for x
