# Math Help - inequality expressed in absolute value notation

1. ## inequality expressed in absolute value notation

some plz help me wit this problem

x is greater then or equal to 12

x is less then or equal to 2

-5 is less then p and p is less then 2 so, (-5,2)

these inequalities have to be expresses in absolute value notation..i dont have a clue how to start...
thanks

2. x is greater then or equal to 12
x is less then or equal to 2

midpoint between 12 and 2 is 7 ... distance from 7 to either 2 or 12 is 5

$|x - 7| \geq 5$

-5 is less then p and p is less then 2

midpoint between -5 and 2 is -1.5 ... distance from -1.5 to either -5 or 2 is 3.5

$|x - (-1.5)| < 3.5$

3. ## confused on the signs

ok soo working through those problems I get the same answers but im confused on how to determine the sign of the answer. How do i know if the answer is going to be greater then or equal to, less then or equal to, or less then, or greater then?

thanks again

put your solutions on a number line and test the intervals in your problem
