1. ## I feel stupid!

My son is having problems with this Math pattern and a math sum

I was boasting about how good I was as a kid at these, well the old grey matter is clogged up I think

8,40,20, ? 50,250, ?
also
24+(12-1)/10=

Jim

2. 8,40,20, ? 50,250, ?

I see the pattern (multiply by 5, cut in half ... repeat).

24+(12-1)/10=

24 + (11)/10 =

24 + 1.1 =

25.1

Mutiply by 5.
Next step you divide by 2.

You have to do this in a particualar order. Remember Bodmas.

B = Brackets
O = Others (E.G. Indices)
D = Division
M = Multiplication
S = Subtraction

$\displaystyle 24+\frac{(12-1)}{10}$

Brackets first:

$\displaystyle =24 + \frac{11}{10}$

As there is not other (Indices etc) operation so skip to Division.

$\displaystyle =24 + 1.1$

Also, there is not multiplication operation so the final stage is Addition (As this will lead to the answer hence no subtraction needed).

$\displaystyle =25.1$
