A delicatessen has 8 pounds of plain sausage and 10 pounds of garlic-flavored sausage. The deli wants to make as much bratwurst as possible. Each pound of bratwurst requires 3/4 pounds of plain sausage and 1/4 pound of garlic flavored sausage. Find the maximum number of pounds of bratwurst that can be made.

man.. i just can't think of how to set it up >.< makes my head hurt so bad! Help!!

In solving word problems, understand what the problem asks for. This problem is asking for the maximum number of pounds of bratwurst that can be made. Okay.

Check now how many 1-lb bratwurst can be made from the available plain sausages.
Each pound of bratwurst requires 3/4 lb of plain sausage...
Okay.
And there are available 8 lbs of plain sausage.
So, 8 / (3/4) = 32/3 pieces of 1-lb bratwurst can be made.

How about from the garlic-flavored sausages?
Each pound of bratwurst requires 1/4 lb of garlic-flavored sausage...
There are available 10 lbs of garlic-flavored sausages.
So, 10 / (1/4) = 40 pieces of 1-lb bratwurst can be made. ....more than 32/3.

From those, it is shown that the plain sausage rules on how much 1-lb bratwurst can be made. Only 32/3 numbers of 1-lb bratwurst can be made.

Hence,
from plain sausage, (32/3)(3/4) = 32/4 = 8 lbs bratwurst
from garlic-flavored sausage, (32/3)(1/4) = 8/3 lbs bratwurst
