    Exclamation Adding fractions... I think

    my daughter needs help with her math homework and I have no idea what I am doing....

    George enjoys listening to 7/8 of his CD collection. Of the CDs he enjoys, 3/4 are considered Heavy Metal. What fraction of his Collection are heavy metal CDs that he enjoys? Explain why your answer is less than 3/4?

    I am sure I can figure out most of it if you will just explain the procedure.

    To get \frac{3}{4} of a hundred cd's, you say: 100\cdot\frac{3}{4} which equals 75. A similar process is used for this problem.

    So George likes \frac{7}{8} of his CD's, and \frac{3}{4} of those are heavy metal.

    So to find what franction he likes is heavy metal, you have to multiply \frac{7}{8} by \frac{3}{4}

    so: \frac{7}{8}\cdot \frac{3}{4} = \frac{7\cdot 3}{8\cdot 4} = \frac{21}{32}

    So The fraction of cd's he enjoys that are heavy metal is \frac{21}{32}
