Let's come up with some rules

    jan's age = 14 years younger than thomas's age minus 2

    which in equation form:

    jan's age = thomas's age - 14 - 2

    And thomas's age is 23.

    jan's age = 23 - 14 - 2 = 7

So jan is seven years old.

Like what Quick said, but remember she was 7 years old two years ago. Currently, she's 9 years old.

No she is 14 years younger than Thomas was two years ago.

I believe my original post is correct.

Your original post is correct. But they wanted her current age, so you have to add 2. She was 7 years old two years ago.

You didn't pick up what I was trying to say. She is seven years old right now because she is 14 years younger than Thomas's age was when he was two years younger.

edit: I made so many grammatical errors that it's not even funny.

    Let's revise the problem again:
"Jan is 14 yrs. younger than thomas was 2 yearz ago."

The time here is 2 years behind. Just for the sake of being clear, assume that the current year is 2008. In the year 2006, Jan is 14 years younger than thomas was.

"if thomas is currently 23 yrs. old wat is jans current age."

Clearly the wording of the problem suggests that when you find Jan's age 2 years ago, add 2 to get her current age.

I'm sorry for picking on you like this. Your original post is correct, but you found the age 2 years ago. They wanted the current age of Jan, so you need to add 2.

    Again, I'm sorry.

The time here is not 2 years behind. Is is the present tense. Jan is 14 years younger than thomas was 2 years ago.

Jan is in the present tense, thomas is in the past tense. You would be right if the question read: Jan was 14 years younger than thomas was 2 years ago. But it doesn't.

This is a strangely worded problem since it involves no algebra, but Quick is correct on this one, and I think his explanation was pretty clear, too.

Jan IS 14 years younger than Thomas WAS 2 years ago. Two years ago, Thomas WAS 21. Jan IS 14 years less than that, which is indeed 7.
