    {[3 / (x-1)] - [3 / (a - 1)]} / (x - a)

    Simplify:

    {[3 / (x-1)] - [3 / (a - 1)]} / (x - a)

    The textbook gives the answer:

    3 / [(x - 1)(a - 1)]

    I'm getting:

    3(a - x) / [(x - 1)(a - 1)(x - a)]

    Help would be appreciated.

Either there is a typo in your post or the book has the wrong answer.

Your answer is on the right track but can still be simplified further. Remember that m-n=-(n-m).

After further simplification there is only a difference of a minus sign in front between what you will get and what you say your text book gives.
