Basic Operations with polynomials
Ok i havent done these in a looong time and i need someone to refresh my memory lol

which of the following expressions represents the product of 3 less than twice x and 2 more than the quantity 3 times x?
Answer: 6x^2 - 5x - 6

looks simple enough but i cannot remember anything, i need to know how to get that answer, thanks in advance!

twice x means 2x. so 3 less than that is 2x - 3. 3 times x is just 3x and 2 more than that is 3x + 2. the quantity we are looking for, it the product (that is, we multiply the two), thus we want

(2x - 3)(3x + 2) = 6x^2 -5x - 6

don't hit yourself on the head (Tongueout)

rather, familiarize yourself with math vocabulary. there are a few buzz words you need to get acquainted with that can help you translate word problems into math problems.

example:

product means multiply
difference means subtract
twice means two times
thrice means three times
less means subtract, in the sense that you subtract whatever something is less by
more means add, analogous to less

get used to these words and others that will help you translate from english to math...then you won't have to be slapping your head at these things, but you can laugh and do the problem and write a note to your professor at the end, "don't insult my intelligence with such trivial problems" ...be sure to put a :) at the end, or your professor might take that the wrong way

...i'm kidding about that note thing. you can only do things like that when you're older...adults don't like kids mouthing off
