# Math Help - Need some algebra help please

1. ## Need some algebra help please

I need help trying to learn how to set up equations. Barton and Gonzalez invested 195,000 in a business venture. If Gonzalez invested 2 1/2 times as much as Barton, how much did he invest?

I am trying to learn how to set up equations and solve them I have never had algebra before so it is a struggle for me. Please help if you can? Thank you

2. this is a very simple problem. but if you haven't had algebra, it's gonna be the equivalent of me looking at calculus (i've yet to have it).

Let $b = Barton's\;\;money\;\;invested$
Let $g = Gonzalez's\;\;money\;\;invested$

Barton and Gonzalez invested 195,000 in a business venture.
You can make the equation: $b + g = 195,000$

Because that says exactly what is quoted above.

...Gonzalez invested 2 1/2 times as much as Barton...
So whatever amount Barton invested, Gonzalez's amount is gonna be 2 1/2 times that amount.

You can make this equation: $g = 2.5b$

So you have this system:

$b + g = 195,000$
$g = 2.5b$

Understand?
