Jenny lived half her life in california and one third of her life in new york. She then moved to Florida. If she has lived in Florida for four years, how old is she now ?

Follow this very simple pattern, EVERY time.

#1 Name Stuff.
#2 Name What?
#3 What Does It Want?
#4 Name That!

"how old is she now ?"

That is what it wants. Name it. Write it down.

J = How old Jenny is now.

After that VERY important step, the rest is a translation problem.

"Jenny lived half her life in california"

J/2

"one third of her life in new york."

J/3

"she has lived in Florida for four years"

4

"how old is she now ?" J!!!! We defined that earlier.

J = J/2 + J/3 + 4

Solve for J.

Every time. Trust me on this.

Hello,

Let C be the number of years she spent in California
Let N be ------------- New York
Let F be ------------- Florida

C+N+F=her age A

C=1/2 A
N=1/3 A
F=4

So :

$\displaystyle \underbrace{\frac{1}{2}}_{\frac{3}{6}} A+\underbrace{\frac{1}{3}}_{\frac{2}{6}} A+4=A$

$\displaystyle \frac{5}{6} A + 4 = A$

$\displaystyle 4=\frac{1}{6} A$

So A=4*6=24

one last question, how did you get 1/6 ?

Because $\displaystyle A-\frac{5}{6} A = \frac{1}{6} A$;)
