    Since denominators are equal, we can just add the numerator:

    \frac {3}{2y} + \frac {5}{2y}

    \frac {(3 + 5)}{2y} <---- Add numerators

    \frac {8}{2y}

    \frac {8}{2} reduces down to \frac {4}{1}

    so we have:

    \frac {4}{y}
