Division Problem
Yeah, I'm not in middle school but I ought to be... Studying for the GMAT and I can't figure out this flippin division question and could use some assistance.

I keep coming up with 6.028 but the answer is 6.09, as any math calculator will tell you.

How is the question...

It starts with:

19.6 / 3.22 (which is supposed to = 6.09 - but how?)

I then converted it to:

1960 / 322

But I come up with this:

1960 / 322

322 x 6 = 1932

1960 - 1932 = 28

Add in the decimals, blah, blah... And that's what I got.

Are there any good math calculators online that actually show the work?

You are using a remainder in decimal position!
Okay,
6*322=1932

1960-1932=28
28/322=.08

A remainder is not to be put in a decimal expansion of a fraction. It must be considered in relation to the denominator, ie. divide it by 322. Continue as necessary...

i'm still struggling here....

How does this work?

28/322=.08

When I run 28 divided by 322 I too get: .08 in the calculators... How how do I achieve this result with NO calculator, i.e., all on paper?

Basically... How on earth is this achieved (showing work so I know how to do it in the future)?

28 / 322 = 0.086

Here is a nice tutorial on what to do.

And, from the same site, dealing with decimal places specifically:

This is only a procedure to calculate the quotient:
Code:

```28.00000 ÷ 322 = 0.08695....  0 ↓↓↓    0 * 322 ---↓↓↓  280↓↓   0↓↓    0 * 322 ----↓↓  2800↓  2576↓    8 * 322  ----↓   2240   1932    6 * 322  -----   308```
You only calculate the next digit, multiply this digit number by the divisor and subtract this result. Add the next digit from above and repeat this process.
I hope this helps a little bit. Probably you'll find better explanations if you take a math book of the second class.
I figured it out...
::sigh::
I just did:
28.00 ÷ 322
Since I only needed the answer to the hundredth rounded, I finally figured it out. Yeah, I just need to see the work done to figure out how it's supposed to work and then from there I'll be able to apply that to future problems.
