    Word problem for 12 year old

    I am trying to help my son with this word problem and I am struggling.

    On one side there is 3 baseball bats and one glove that equals 130.00. and on the other side there is 2 gloves and one bat that also equals 130.00. How much does each cost to come up with 130.00 on each side?

    Thanks

    make x=baseball bats
    y=gloves

    so,

    3x+1y=130

    and

    1x+2y=130

    now, just solve one equations in terms of the other, example, the first one for y=130-3x

    now, substitute that value into the second one and you have:
    1x+2*(130-3x)=130

    now just solve for x, x=26
    with that, go to any of the 2 equations above and solve for y, y=52
