does any1 have an ideas as when to use log in a question.???

To solve for exponents.

For example:

$<br /> 10^x = 100$

Take the log of both sides:

$<br /> \log {10^x} = \log {100}$

Using laws of logarithms we have:

$x\cdot \log {10} = \log {100}$

Then simply calculate the logs and solve for x:

$x = 2$
