    factor equation

My professor did something that I just don't get. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks a lot.

    (7c+1)8 - 1 = 7(8c) + 8 - 1 = 7(8c+1)

I understand how to go from the first step to the second. It's going from the second step to the last that is throwing me off.

    7(8c) + 8 - 1 = 7(8c) + 7

    Factor out the 7.

    7(8c+1)
