A quick way to do it:

    \frac{x^2 - 4x + 5}{x - 2} = \frac{(x-2)^2 - 4 + 5}{x - 2} = \frac{(x-2)^2 + 1}{x - 2} = x - 2 + \frac{1}{x-2}.
