Sam and Susan have only nickels and dimes. Sue has 35 cents, Sam has the same number of dimes as Sue has nickels and he has half as many nickels as Sue has dimes. How many nickels does Sue have?
Sue has either 5 nickels or 7 nickels.
Since Sam must have half as many nickels as Sue has dimes, Sue must have an even number of dimes (or else Sam would have 1/2 of a nickel). So, Sue either has:
0 dimes and 7 nickels
2 dimes and 5 nickels
(Since 4 dimes is 40 cents, which is too much.)
It's possible that the assumption is Sue has both nickels and dimes, but the problem doesn't state that explicitly - it says Sam and Sue have only nickels and dimes. Depending on how you read that, you could get only one answer (2,5) or both answers.
By logic there are only 4 possible combinations that add up to 35 cents.
1) 1 nickel + 3 Dimes
2) 3 nickels + 2 Dimes
3) 5 nickels + 1 Dime
4) 7 nickels + 0 Dimes
Choice 4 is out becuase it doesn't have any dimes. (She has both nickels and dimes)
Choice 1,3 are out because sam have half as many nickels as sue has dimes.
therefore she must have an even amount of dimes.
so choice #2 is our winner.
