# Thread: Generate Two Random Numbers

1. ## Generate Two Random Numbers

Generate two random numbers that have a sum of 22. The sum of their squares is 172.

My Set Up:

Let x and y be the two numbers.

x + y = 22
x^2 + y^2 = 172

Is this the correct system of equations?

2. ## Re: Generate Two Random Numbers

I don't think there are any such numbers, but your system looks correct to me.

Yes CORRECT.
Note that,
$y=22-x$
$x^2+(22-x)^2=172$

not any real ones anyway

5. ## Re: Generate Two Random Numbers

Yes. However "generate two random numbers" is confusing
and should be simply: "find 2 numbers".

Also, the example you're providing has no real solution:
