1. ## Salt Solutions 2

How much water must be evaporated from 240 gallons of a 3 percent salt solution to make 6 percent salt solution?

I must first multiply 240 by 0.03 to get 7.2.

Yes?

My Equation:

Let x = amount of water to be evaporated

7.2/(240 - x) = 0.05

Correct?

Yes, except that 6%= 0.06, not 0.05.

I suggest you actually solve yourself instead of asking if equation is correct.

If I solve the wrong equation set up this will only frustrate me more. By showing my part and equation (right or wrong) I can then proceed after people with more math practice have read my effort.

It is a typo at my end.

6. ## Re: Salt Solutions 2

7.2/(240 - x) = 0.06

7.2 = 0.06(240 - x)

7.2 = 14.4 - 0.06x

7.2 - 14.4 = -0.06x

-7.2 = -0.06x

-7.2/-0.06 = x

120 = x

So, 120 gallons of water must be evaporated.
