1. ## division

Is the division of matrix is defined?
Or it is meaningless...

2. ## Re: division

multiplication by the matrix inverse (assuming it exists) has a similar effect to division.

3. ## Re: division

Many matrices do not have a matrix. Writing $\displaystyle AB^{-1}$ makes it clear that B must an inverse where $\displaystyle \frac{A}{B}$ does not.

Also, matrix multiplication is not, in general, commutative. Writing $\displaystyle \frac{A}{B}$ does not indicate whether $\displaystyle AB^{-1}$ or $\displaystyle B^{-1}A$ is intended.

4. ## Re: division

Unfortunately it is too late to correct a rather silly mistake (so I could pretend I never made it!). Of course, in the first sentence I meant to write "Many matrices do not have a multiplicative inverse".
