# Thread: Make 55 using only 1 9 8 and 4 only once

1. ## Make 55 using only 1 9 8 and 4 only once

I've been doing this math problem solving thing where you have to make 1-100 using only the numbers 1,9,8 and 4 once. However, after completing the problem, it turns out I was missing the number 55, and am now struggling to complete the problem, having on 55 left. Could someone solve this for me so I can hand this in tomorrow?

2. ## Re: Make 55 using only 1 9 8 and 4 only once

I presume 1,9,8,4 are to remain in that order; so
-1*9 + 8^sqrt(4) = 55

Curious: how did you get "1"?
This way: -1*sqrt(9) + 8 - 4 = 1 ?

3. ## Re: Make 55 using only 1 9 8 and 4 only once

Thanks for the reply. The numbers don't have to be in order, and even if you you could do 1 to the power of all the other numbers combined. I'm not certain, but my college may count sqrt as use of the number 2, so if there any other way that you can solve this? Despite that, I have used sin-1 in a lot of my answers, but I'm going to claim it as an expression rather than a number, which I guess you could claim sqrt to be. Any who, can you think of a different solution?

Well, if sqrt cannot be used, what can then?
+ - / * only?
Is ! allowed?
