just having trouble understanding some things, no doubt you guys know it all...
these are steps to make equivalent fractions, i don't understand this bit...
 Form equivalent fractions by using the LCD
 13/4 = 65/20 and 3/5 = 12/20
how is this possible, i'm not seeing where they got the 65

$\displaystyle 13/4=65/20$
They multiplied top and bottom by $\displaystyle 5$ 
$\displaystyle (13/4)(5/5)=(13.5)/(4.5)=65/20$
When you multiply the top and bottom of a fraction by the same number, it is like multiplying it by $\displaystyle 1$ and so it is still equivalent to what you started with.
