    i hate questions like these, you can come up with anything and say that's the pattern...

    i remember one of my professors made a point once. he gave us a list of numbers and asked us to tell him what pattern he was thinking of. we came up with a formula that worked, but when he asked us to predict the next number, we were way off. the problem: he was thinking of the street numbers for the subway station stops rather than a sequence of numbers given by a mathematical formula
